This is the story of a poor family embarking on a rare and rich adventure. Cordelia, her husband, Joel, and their three children live in Mexico, though they are U.S. citizens. On an airy railway station platform just outside the city of Atlanta, Georgia back in 2011, Joel and Cordelia are waiting for a morning train to carry them downtown, where they wish to find a home quickly, before the birth of their son. They select an apartment in a predominantly African-American complex. The birth of their first child is a jubilant time, despite foreshadowed danger. Next, Cordelia recalls the day she met Joel in 2008 highlighting how his being on the autism spectrum made their initial meeting strangely ethereal. Joel is fascinated by the idea of angels on Earth. His lively spirit ignites a feeling of hope in Cordelia's mind. Two years after their meeting, Cordelia and Joel are forced to become homeless together for three months staying at a forgotten campground, sleeping in a dumpster under the stars, coping with life in a homeless shelter, and spending nights behind a church by the sea. Returning to 2011, the couple connect deeply with the members of the black community that has accepted them and their baby son. In the midst of the feeling that they have finally found a good home, Joel and Cordelia decide to have another child. The arrival of their daughter in 2012 is a ghastly experience, where Cordelia gives birth alone in a run-down hospital, soiled by bureaucracy and negative attitudes towards those who can't pay to go elsewhere. After the painful delivery time is behind them, Joel and Cordelia rebuild, happily raising children in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. Their already unnerving relationship with Cordelia's mother worsens. Racial tension in Atlanta, family secrets, and a nation's subtle deterioration put pressure on the family as they experience the divine purpose of parenthood. Ultimately, two drug-addicted neighbors, Cordelia's conniving mother, a crooked lawyer, and financial woes work together to end the Vandeberg's lives in the U.S. The family moves to Mexico in 2015. Their first home is in the mountainous state of Chiapas and owned by a wealthy Spanish man; he has overcharged them for a bare-bones apartment with mud walls. Inevitably, the city in which they reside becomes too difficult, intolerable for a lengthy stay, resulting in the family traveling on a twenty-hour bus ride with some surprising pitfalls along the way. The story ends on an island in the Gulf of Mexico, where a lighted path unfurls. A reason to continue on their journey is revealed.

When I first began reading this book I believed it was going to be a good-hearted, honest book, full of life lessons, which plodded along consistently like the tortoise outpacing the hare. But a couple of chapters in, this "tortoise" suddenly burst into flight, carrying me through the most extreme set of circumstances, meeting some of the best (and worst) people.The reader survives the crazy landlord Randy, plummets into the inhospitable town of Hawthorne, where the author's autistic husband shows great resourcefulness, helping them find shelter on a freezing night. His unique use of a pineapple brought tears to my eyes, mixing mirth with the terror of their situation that night.
The author airs some of the dirtiest familial laundry I've ever seen, and she and her family then fly to Mexico to escape the influence of her insanely narcissistic mother. From the moment they arrive in Mexico the tale turns truly heart-stopping, with unbelievable twists and turns, leaving a situation worse than the one they started off in, but ending on a strange island in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Few Return To The Sunlit Lands" is an inspirational book that details a family's journey through difficult struggles in the USA and eventually in Mexico. Told through the author Cordelia's first person perspective, the reader gets a rare look into homelessness, poverty, racial injustices, crime, discrimination, disability issues, family differences, etc. The reader cannot help but want to follow along her journey and empathize with her and her family's struggles, all the while hoping for a happy outcome. Lots of twists and turns along the way, told through series of flashbacks, foreshadowing, emotional feelings, and a unique surprise ending. Highly recommended! Five stars!
I enjoyed greatly this book! I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to read a remarkable story of a young couple's amazingly strong and unwavering love for each other and their two beautiful children, through a life of poverty, daily struggles, and the unknown. This book shows the wonderful courage, sacrifices and strengths of Joel and Cordelia through their homelessness, journeys and living situations as they follow their hearts, instincts, desires and convictions trying to survive and find peace and happiness despite deplorable conditions, ruthless people and opposing forces. I learned from this story that with true love, hope and faith, nothing is impossible and things are not so scary. And I learned that being real, honest and modest, and finding love, joy, and comfort in the little things and in understanding people' s special differences, intense pains, and unique and hardened ways of life that is what can bring change for the better and more harmony to this world. Great job!
I found this book very relatable in many ways. I normally don't read nonfiction. Mostly, I stick to fantasy and find nonfiction a bit dull. This story is different though. I felt more of a connection to it and found myself thorougly enjoying it. The author has talent and if there are any books in the future and I have the spare money for them, I'd love to get them later on. )
A worthwhile book that looks into some of the worst of life in the States. Written in first person, this book gets at the core of a lot of issues (poverty, lack of family support, autism, etc.) but also offers light, hope, and finding happiness through it all despite what's happening in the world around you. It's real and captivating; this is a heart-wrenching and heart-warming read all in one. Looking forward to future novels from this author!
